Day One. Starting up Forest Rd. 190. This dirt road leaves the pavement from Hwy 89 about 4 miles east of the junction with Hwy 4. 190 loops through historic mining country and, via the Leviathan Mine Rd., connects back to Hwy 89 a few miles west of Monitor Pass. Mitchell (High Sierra SUV Trails, Vol I, p. 81) calls this the Loope Canyon Loop. This mining area was very active between 1866 and 1888, producing much gold, silver, and copper.
